Is Your Blog SEO Savvy?

April 30, 2009

Statistics show that over the past few years "blogging" (web logging) has increased exponentially in popularity. People today will blog about almost anything you can think of (and a lot that you can't think of).

While some choose to blog for personal expression, others choose to blog for reasons pertaining to business. Perhaps, it's to keep clients informed of corporate offerings. Or, maybe, it's because you've heard that a blog can increase your influence with your readers and elevate your web site's performance in search rankings.

I've worked with many clients using many different blogging platforms. Here are a few key things to check under your blog's hood…

  1. Keywords in Your Post Titles
Be choosy about the titles of your blog's posts. Take every opportunity to place good keywords in the titles. You can take advantage of free tools such as Google's Optimizer to help you find words that will deliver the best results.
  2. Page Title
When you view an individual post, your blog should display the post's title in your web browser's title. If you follow suggestion 1, then good keywords will also be in your page's title and give your post more points with search engines.
  3. Post Titles in the Location Bar
Equally important to the browser window's title, make sure that titles of your blog's posts are used as the URL. In general, make sure that the URL to your blog's post doesn't read something like: "http://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/?postID=2345" Instead, the post's URL should read something such as: http://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/this-is-a-post-title/
  4. Metadata
Does your blog allow you to include keywords and descriptions in your post's metadata? One way to find out is viewing your web page's source and searching for meta name="description" and meta name="keywords". Searching for either phrase should return some results in the fairly top portion of your web page's code. The results should also contain content that you were allowed to manually choose.

There are more technical aspects that a qualified Search Engine Optimizer can examine and assist you with. If you are concerned that your blog has failed on some of the above points and/or it might not be delivering the results you desire, please contact us and we'll be happy to discuss other options.
